TRANSLATION GRANT LAYOUT
My first, and one of the biggest projects I tackled at the Sacramento SPCA, was the Translation Grant. This consisted of 45 documents that needed to be updated in language and design. These would then be sent to a third party company to be translated into different languages.

These documents were separated based on what type of pet you have: dog, cat, or other small animal. One of my tasks was to make an updated icon to indicate which pet the customer had. Another challenge I faced was updating the layout of the sheets and forms to be easily read and navigated by workers and customers.
I settled on a format where all information could be laid out on one sheet of paper (front and back) with callouts of important information separated into a column on the left side of the page.

One of my biggest challenges with this project was making each document easily editable in Microsoft Word. Per the request of the translation company, I made every document in Word following the new guidelines and standards for the forms I had created.
MERCHANDISE DESIGN

The last event of the year is the Jingle Bell Pup Crawl in December, where people and their pets come to downtown Sacramento and do a pet-friendly bar crawl.
To make the design inclusive, I made the dog a non-descript breed to communicate a sense of welcome for all pet owners. His smile, eye contact, and breaking the oval, encourage you to join him in the festivities. In theme with Christmas, I made his nose red and gave him a sweater lined with Christmas trees and stars.

Community outreach is very important to the Sacramento SPCA. The shelter provides low-cost surgeries to pet owners in need of spay/neuter services to prevent unwanted over population and crowding in shelters.
Being able to inject some humor into this project provides relief in a serious situation, and was the reason why I loved to work on this project. Laughter is the best medicine after all!

This event is the shelter’s biggest event of the year, and celebrates the community’s commitment to maintaining the health and happiness of owner’s dogs.
To provide the feeling of openness, I illustrated several different breeds of dogs to make everyone feel welcome, and masked them into a paw shape. This makes it recognizable from up close and a distance away as a dog-centered event.
HEARTLINE MAGAZINE PAGE

I had the oppoprtunity to design a page for Heartline magazine that went into detail about a seasonal program offered, Camp Kindness. The program is focused on teaching kids how to properly care for animals through hands-on activities, group collaboration, and reflection on what they’ve learned through arts and crafts.
Through collaboration with the camp educators, I designed a page reflecting the different parts of curriculum through photos (featuring a chosen photo of camper work).
One challenge I faced was balancing everything on a single page. I opted for a large header that focused on various hands-on activities, and I used color and framing to make the educator feature stand out from the rest of the text. Tilting the camper’s work added visual interest without pulling too much interest away from the rest of the information on thes page.

This particular issue of Heartline also featured my merchandise design (above) on the opposite page from my article for the upcoming Pup Crawl event. It includes information detailing the time, place, and some of the venues on the crawl.
This page was designed by Jessica Shijo.
